Revive SGU Petition (Multi Network)

To the Directors

I hereby respectfully petition you to take over and revive the series Stargate Universe (aka SGU).

Spanning 17 seasons and over 350 episodes and movies, Stargate is one of the longest running and most profitable science fiction franchises in television history. It is also among the finest, earning more than 200 Constellation, Emmy, Gemini, Hugo, Leo, Nebula, and Saturn nominations and awards. Its extraordinary popularity after its discontinuation has prompted commentary by Forbes, The Street, and TiVo.

SGU's cancellation resulted partly from scheduling errors that can easily be corrected. Unlike its predecessors Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis, SGU was aired during the fall season against tough competiton, including other science fiction. It was poorly promoted, and its time slot was repeatedly changed, confusing viewers and pairing it with suboptimal lead-ins.

Also, SGU's audience includes a high proportion of early adopters of new technology, whose embrace of online viewing resulted in their substantial undercounting by traditional ratings systems. SGU thus presents a golden opportunity for online networks to increase their viewership, as well as for traditional television networks hoping to establish leadership positions in the Internet television revolution.

SGU's writers wisely penned an open-ended second-season finale that allows continuation with a subset (or none) of its original actors and sets. In any case, many of the actors are available, and most of the sets are reported to be in the keeping of longtime Stargate actor David Hewlett. Though he has issued no statement, we believe he would cooperate in making the sets available for SGU's continuation.

The preceding are important reasons, but above all we ask you to Revive SGU because it is the right thing to do. Like no other series before it, Stargate Universe is about the challenges of space travel, and the majesty of the cosmos. It inspires in mankind a sense of wonder—the longing to do great deeds, and to reach for the stars.
